MOA (Mechanism of Action)

How a drug produces its therapeutic effect at the biological level, the starting point for most explainer content.

MOA, or mechanism of action, is how a drug produces its effect at the cellular or molecular level: which receptor it binds, which pathway it blocks or activates, and what downstream biological change actually treats the condition. It's distinct from clinical efficacy, which asks whether the drug works in patients. MOA explains why it should.

MOA content is one of the most common formats in pharma marketing because it tends to run first. An HCP audience usually wants to understand how a drug works before engaging with efficacy data, so a well-built MOA animation is often the first asset a brand produces in a launch sequence. SwishX's Magic Video engine is built around exactly this kind of visual explainer, since mechanism content tends to be heavy on animation and pacing and light on text.
