Patient Journey
The mapped sequence of a patient's experience from symptom onset through diagnosis and treatment.
A patient journey is the mapped sequence of what a patient actually goes through for a given condition: symptom onset, seeking care, diagnosis (often delayed or missed the first time), treatment initiation, and ongoing management. Brand teams build these maps from a mix of patient research and claims data to find where the real delays and drop-off points are, rather than assuming a clean, linear path.
The map is what tells a brand where and how to communicate, not just what to say. Awareness content aimed at undiagnosed patients belongs earlier in the journey and looks nothing like adherence support aimed at someone already on therapy. DTC campaigns, HCP disease education, and patient support programs are usually built for different points on the same journey rather than for one undifferentiated audience, which is why journey stage is often the first filter applied before any content gets planned.
